CHARACTER
Name: Lord Eddard "Ned" Stark
Canon: A Game of Thrones- A Song of Ice and Fire
Age: Early 40's
Timeline: During the episode "The Wolf and the Lion." Just before Ned fights with Jaime Lannister at King's Landing.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A
Personality:
"The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword."
Eddard Stark, informally called "Ned" to his friends, is the Lord of Winterfell, Lord Paramount of the North, and Warden of the North. As well as being Lord of the North, he is also Hand to King Robert Baratheon; Robert, being one of Ned's closest childhood friends. Being Hand of the King makes Ned the second-most powerful man in the Seven Kingdoms. He can speak with the King’s voice, command the King’s armies and draft the King’s laws. He can even sit upon the Iron Throne to dispense justice if need be. As for physical appearance, Ned is a strong built man of around six foot and has a good, strong sword arm. He has long, brown hair, a stubbly beard and wears the Hand of the King brooch on his tunic. Outside in the cold, Ned often wears his wolf furs; the dire wolf being the symbol of House Stark.
Ned being a Stark is known for his sense of honour and justice, as he dislikes deceit, intrigue, and secrecy. Though many find him kind, some consider his reserved personality a sign of coldness and disdain. Yet, Starks are renown for their sense of duty and honour, being true to the old ways. Ned can sometimes uphold the sense of honour until it borders on stubbornness. He had no qualms in sending a deserter from the Night's Watch to his execution, as he was just following his principals. He even had his young son, Bran, watch the execution to teach him the way of his family from generations ago.
Ned is foremost a proud man at heart and a loyal husband to his wife, Catelyn Stark. He cares greatly for his six children, one including a bastard, Jon Snow. He rarely talks about Jon's mother though and often finds it a tough subject to discuss. He is not a man to be afraid to show his softer side either. His wife had to leave Winterfell behind to visit her sister, Lysa Arryn, at the Eyrie, and Ned is almost tearful when she goes. They embrace and share a kiss, before parting. When he isn't doing duties for the king, Ned's spending time with his family, teaching them the ways of old and how to be honourable people. For his youngest daughter, Arya, he hired a sword coach to teach her how to use a sword in combat. It shows that he actually cares about his children, unlike some lords, who just have children to marry off for money or wealth. As well as loving his family, Ned also loves his homeland, Winterfell. It can be a cold, bleak place but the cold and snow run in the blood of the Starks and Ned finds solace by being within his winter home.
"The blood of the First Men still flows in the veins of the Starks, and we hold to the belief that the man who passes the sentence should swing the sword. If you would take a man’s life, you owe it to him to look into his eyes and hear his final words. And if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the man does not deserve to die."
Ned enjoys good company, especially that of Robert Baratheon, and his younger brother, Benjen Stark. A good drink and honest conversation is something that Ned really appreciates, more than anything else. He has a good sense of humour and can crack a good joke just like any other man. When he's not busy being the King's Hand, Ned likes to read to unwind, letting himself be torn away from the politics of war and the King's duties. Ned would never shy away from a sparring session with his oldest son, Robb, or anyone else, as he enjoys a good sword fight when he can get one.
Something that really irks Ned is the boring chore of politics and organising events, such as the King's tourney. Robert had asked Ned, as the King's Hand, to organise the running of the grand tourney, held in King's Landing. Ned had to monitor how much was spent, who was going and other such tedious affairs. This was all done in front of Robert's aides and advisors to the court. Ned was reluctant to take up the job of King's Hand in the beginning, but considered it an honour from his closest friend, Robert. The whole boring affair of politics is something Ned really does despise, as he'd rather be back at Winterfell, protecting his family and being a lord of the North. He couldn't really care what was going on at the tourney and who won; he just wanted to go home.
Ned's life is always under constant strain, due to the different houses fighting amongst themselves for the crown of Westeros. Even though Robert has been king for over seventeen years, the different houses, such as Lannister, Targaryen and Baratheon, still crave the throne from under Robert's grasp. Ned dislikes the Lannisters especially and views them as corrupted and untrustworthy. Cersei Lannister is the King's wife and believes that Ned is a fool and should have never been made Hand to the King. Ned knows of this and is always wary of the Lannisters and what sort of move they might make towards him next. His oldest daughter, Sansa, is betrothed to the young Prince Joffrey Baratheon; Robert and Cersei's son. Ned believes that Cersei is trying to force his daughter into the relationship, just to gain another seat of power for the Lannister family.
"The winters are hard, but the Starks will endure. We always have."
Ned's greatest fear would be losing his beloved family and his homeland around him. He is often afraid of losing his sons and daughters to rival families, believing that they aren't ready to face the large world without him. Westeros can be a cruel and unrelenting world, full of violence and often sinister and corrupted people. Giving up his oldest daughter, Sansa, to wed Prince Joffrey is something he fears, since he doesn't believe she knows what she wants. Being so young, he is frightened that she will fall into the trap of young love and never be able to go back once wedded. Ned doesn't want his thirteen year old daughter to be taken away from him and doesn't believe that Sansa and Joffrey are suited to each other at all. This is done much to Sansa's disproval, since she believes that Joffrey is her knight in shining armour, her prince. As for death, Ned does not fear death as most men would, being a true honourable man and warrior.
Just like any man, Ned can be stubborn as a mule and is often jealous towards men who take an interest in his wife. A man called Lord Baelish, or Littlefinger, once knew Catelyn Tully, before she married Ned. Ned doesn't trust Littlefinger, since he knew that they had a strong friendship and a possible relationship in the past. This is something that Littlefinger uses against Ned to often tease and annoy him. During one time, Ned thrust Littlefinger up against a brothel wall, demanding to know where his wife was. He nearly killed the man in a blind rage. Sometimes, Starks can often act without thinking, which gives them a rather reckless reputation; Ned included. He can be rather a hot-head when he wants to be and doesn't mind giving the odd punch in the face or ask a man to a duel. Honour is everything for Ned.
"Lord Baelish, perhaps I was wrong to distrust you."
-Eddard Stark.
"Distrusting me was the wisest thing you've done since you climbed off your horse."
-Petyr Baelish.

Ned looked up at the sky and felt the cold, cutting wind slice through his warm furs, as the snow fell softly around him. Although he could feel the cold, he did not find it unwelcoming at all, as he was used to the cold back home in Winterfell. He practically felt nothing even with the cold wind and snow falling continuously around him. Yet, he was far from home. The forest he was currently standing in was nothing like his home. How on earth had he got here?
Was he dreaming? Had he drank too much wine whilst dining with Robert, the king, last night? The snow felt so real though and the wind felt like a familiar embrace for him. He also felt something heavy in his thick fur cloak's pocket. Delving a hand inside, he pulled out a fancy gold time piece of sorts. He had never seen such a thing before but guessed it was worth a few gold. Why had he come here? For what purpose? He wanted to see a friendly face right now; Jon, Bran, Robb, Arya, Sansa.....where were they? Catelyn, his wife also. He was a stranger in these lands.
It seemed as though Ned might get his wish. Bran had also been wandering the streets, looking for someone to inform him of his whereabouts. He'd found the watch not long ago but neither him nor his still nameless dire wolf had any idea of what to do with it. It also seemed as though he had left his furs in Winterfell and while he was used to the cold, the wind was still cutting through his leathers with ease.
But then, the dire wolf barked, signalling another body to the boy. Bran looked up and saw a figure walking towards him. And he smiled as he realised it was one that he recognised. Both boy and wolf ran towards Ned and Bran said one word in greeting.
"Father!"
Ned heard the wolf's bounding steps towards him and then the little boy's voice. He knew that voice. Could it be that he wasn't alone after all? He turned to face the wolf and recognised him immediately. It was Bran's wolf, Summer. Ned's face cracked into a grin at the sight of the magnificent beast, then his eyes shifted to the small figure of his son, Bran.
"Bran! What in all the God's name are you doing out here? Your mother will be worried sick, knowing you came out here with Summer to find me." He captured his son into a warm embrace and sighed with relief to find that he was safe.
The first thing Bran noticed was the apparent name for his dire wolf. How could his father know his name when he, Bran, did not? But he shelved that idea as he buried himself in his father's embrace. The furs were warm and inviting and he was happy that he was no longer alone in this strange place. At the mention of his mother, however, he looked up and spoke sadly.
"I don't know where Mother is, or where we are. I appeared here and found you in my search. This is not Winterfell."
Ned knew the name of his dire wolf, since Bran had named him soon after waking from his coma. It had been a long and hard time to wait for the boy to wake. Catelyn had stayed by his side for the whole time. Ned would have too, apart from his duties would not have allowed it.
"You just appeared? If this isn't Winterfell then.....what sort of place is this? It looks like Winterfell, the snow, the wind, everything." He placed a warm arm around his son's shoulder and offered a smile of encouragement. "At least you're safe, lad. We've been worried about you." He could walk. Ned had nearly forgotten about his son's fall and now it dawned on him. Praise the Gods he hadn't fallen from the tower yet. Or would the moment even happen now? Ned would try and stop it by all means possible; he wanted Bran to have a full and proper life and not lead the life of a cripple.
Bran had not reached that point. For he was still able to walk.
"I know every stone of Winterfell's castle, Father. I don't know where we are but I know where we are not". See. The climbing paid off. Sort of. "I'm sorry, Father. But I didn't fall. I was pushed!" Bran seemed desperate to prove to his father that it wasn't some mere accident. Ned frowned deeply.
"Aye, I know Winterfell too, yet this forest seems familiar to the North." Ned was unsure but he wasn't about to doubt his son, as he knew Bran knew the walls very well. So, Bran knew about his fall, yet he was able to walk. How was that possible? "Pushed? Who pushed you?" Ned frowned and felt anger build inside of him. He the wondered how the boy could walk. "But, you can walk, Bran. We all know about your fall and you were bed ridden for weeks. How can you be walking? It doesn't make any sense."
Bran shuffled his feet, obviously nervous at revealing this answer. The image was still clear in his mind. So he moved onto the next question until asked again. "I don't remember being bed ridden. I was falling and then I was here. With...Summer?" The name sounded both right and wrong. But if his father used it, then it must be true.
"It does. I wish I could explain it. "
Ned's head was spinning. He was confused, shocked and disorientated all at the same time. Had something happened to cause this? Some kind of witchcraft or an act of the God's? Perhaps, they were both dreaming and sharing the same dream? Who knew?
"Bran. Wherever we are, we need to stick together. I don't know where we are or what's happened to us. All we need to do is to stay alive and try to find our way back to Winterfell. Aye, with Summer too." Ned's eyes strayed towards the young dire wolf and felt his mouth crack into a smile. "You named Summer soon after waking from your long sleep after falling. You say you were pushed? Can you remember who pushed you at all?" He had to know. Who would dare push a son of Ned Stark to his possible death? They would pay with their head.
Bran nodded. He wouldn't stray far from his father in this strange land and he was very glad to have his direwolf...Summer...with him. The name sounded right once he had the explanation and timing. So now he could use it.
"I remember..." He fidgeted again and Summer barked. It was both encouragement and truth. He had to tell. "It was...It was the Queen's brother, Jaime Lannister." He could not meet his father's eyes when he said this; instead, he stroked Summer's fur.
At that name Ned sword under his breath. The Lannisters. He should have known they were involved with Bran's fall. He had never fallen in all the years he had started to climb and gain experience. What had Bran ever done to the Lannisters to deserve such a fate? Ned vowed to avenge his son and charge Jaime Lannister with treason and attempted murder. He would see his head upon a spike for this.
